Description
Consummate Raptor - An Osprey
These magnificent raptors migrate back and forth thousands of miles from New England to South America. They typically arrive on Cape Cod late march to early April. Osprey pairs mate for life and generally return to the same nesting location year after year. There are approximately 200 nesting sites on Cape Cod. Nicknamed fish hawk ,osprey are expert fishermen. Their skills are enhanced by a number of specialized adaptations such as a reversible outer toe for grabbing fish, special pads on the feet for holding on to slippery fish, dislocatable shoulder joints, underwater vision, a fleshy nostril that closes and the ability to dive into the water at high speeds after fish, feet first. When males are fishing for the female they normally eat the head off the fish then bring it to the nest for the female.
