Artist's Description
The American lotus, sometimes mistaken for a water lily, has two distinguishing characteristics, a unique seed pod and large round leaves with no slit. There are only two species of lotus, yellow flowering in the Americas, and pink flowering in Asia.
American Lotus was a mainstay of Indians in the Americas ,the root, shoots, flowers and young seeds all being edible.
Its scientific name, Nelumbo Lutea, comes from the Ceylonese word for sacred bean and the Latin word for yellow. It can produce more than 8,000 long-stem yellow flowers per acre and its empty seed pods are often found in flora arrangements. The blossoms open one day, close for one night, open the second day and then the petals drop off. The center of the flower grows to as large as three-inches in diameter. It produces about 20 seeds in a pod that looks like a honeycomb. American lotus seeds have bloomed after 200 years and some in China were viable after 1,200 years.

In short, I am comfortable with the mechanics of my camera and the nuances of the computer software that I use. What is new and exciting to me, is the opportunity to pursue the goal of conveying the beauty and diversity of my surroundings through photography and photographic techniques. Although I have lived in the Cape Cod area of Massachusetts for many...
