Description
Chosen as one of National Geographics top ten boardwalks in America, the Sandwich Boardwalk offers stunning views of salt marshes, sandy dunes, and a meandering creek.
You may also be treated to close up encounters with ospreys, herons or egrets on the hunt in the expansive marsh.( No hot dog stands or gambling casinos here !) The 1,359 foot (approximately 1/4 mile) boardwalk dates back to 1875, when it was first built by Gustavus Howland for 500 dollars. Damage from hurricanes and nor easters have necessitated a number of rebuilds over the years, all of which have followed the original design. Most recently, it was virtually destroyed in 1991 by Hurricane Bob. It was rebuilt within a year with the help of a unique financing strategy involving the sale of over 1700 deck planks that were engraved with the buyers personal messages. (Hence, now it is sometimes referred to as the Plank Walk.)
